There are many different views about the connection between food andidentity If you are what you eat then what am I by Geeta Kothariis an essay that support the idea that culture identity and food haveclose relationship with each other In this essay Kothari showed us herconfusions and struggles in finding out what her true self is She triedto learn and become close with Indians culinary styles and cuisines toprove her Indian origin but she was unable to do so She tried to bringherself to like and fit in with Americans culture and food only tofind that it was an impossible task for her After reading her essay Icame to a conclusion that she closely links her own identity with thefood the eats or likes However from my perspective and my ownexperience I do not think that identity and food are closely linkedwith each other since humans are too sophisticated and complicated to bedefined simply by food In fact ones unique identity can only bedecided by various factors such as hisher personality educationorigin or physical and mental condition Right from the beginning of the essay through a short anecdote we cansee that to Kothari food and identity relate to each other closely Iwant to eat what the kids at school eat bologna hot dogs salami -foods my parents find repugnant 332 shows that Kothari wanted to eatAmerican food that every kid was eating normally at school instead ofIndian food that her mother prepared for her She feared that because ofher food she would look weird strange and standout in a bad way andshe would be separated from her friends In other words she wanted toeat American food to become a true American but she could not becauseher parents were absolutely unfamiliar with American culture and foodIt also seemed that her parents wanted to maintain a small Indian familyinstead of an American one since her mom spent a lot of time in thekitchen cooking only Indian
