What makes life today as difficult as life during the Great Depression can be summed up into two words loans and mortgages During the 1930s these two factors were some of the main reasons for people truly feeling like they were in a depression These factors are also around today leading people to wonder if another Great Depression is coming When the Great Depression started an enormous amount of devastation spread throughout the United States People were losing their jobs and homes left and right The last resort for some was to live in Hoovervilles This was just a popular name for shanty towns built by homeless people during the Great Depression The name was derived for a dislike for President Hoover who did little to nothing to help during the Great Depression It was felt that he was the reason for the poor living conditions and so the small shanty towns were nicknamed Homervilles When President Roosevelt came into office in 1932 he immediately began working on economic recovery His first project was called the New Deal which created housing jobs and other opportunities for a better life It was designed to bring recovery to people and business struggling to survive He created the WPA or the Works Progress Administration This was made to create job openings for those who lost or couldnt find work He also created the Federal Theatre Project to give skilled individuals or those with other talents such as singing and acting the opportunity to also have government given jobs These programs were successful in opening up many job opportunities for people in the 1930s But it did not 100 end the Great DepressionOther groups and programs were created such as the RFC also known as the Reconstruction Finance Committee This was developed to give businesses loans so that they could reopen President Roosevelt also created the Temporary Emergency Relief Administration so enforce that no states were to have
