Sigmund Freud is known as the father of psychoanalysis and is one of the most respected thinkers of the twentieth century While many see him as one of the greatest thinkers of all time others see him as nothing but a sexist control freak Feffer 1982 Freuds theory of Psychosexual Development is one of the most controversial theories in psychology The theory suggest that there are 5 stages of development from birth to adolescence The five stages consist of oral anal phallic latency and the genital These five stages are completed in a predetermine sequence and can result in either a successful completion therefore the child having a healthy personality or can result in failure leading to an unhealthy personality Feffer1982 Freud believed that these stages represents a sexual drive that humans have built up from birth Out of the five stages the most controversial is the phallic stage During this stage the child becomes aware of anatomical sex differences which sets in motion the conflict between erotic attraction resentment rivalry jealousy and fear which Freud called the Oedipus complex in boys and the Electra complex in girls Hall Lindzey Campbell 1998 The Oedipus complex is respected by many psychologist and researchers because of its accurate depiction of boys The theory suggest that boys develop a sexual desire for their mothers and wants to get rid of their fathers The boy then feels that if his father finds out he will take what he loves the most which is his penis The boy then tries to resolve these issues by imitating his dads behaviors therefore taking on the typical male gender role The Electra complex on the other hand is highly discredited by many psychologist and researchers It states that a girl has a brief desire for her father but then realizes that she doesnt have a penis and this leads to the development of penis envy
