World War I brought about major changes in gender roles and challenged many Victorian gender ideologies Throughout the nineteenth century women were expected to work in their homes as well as tend to their husband and childrens needs It was not until the beginning of World War I that these roles changed When women were sent to work during the First World War the idea of gender being split into two separate spheres quickly became outdated While the women first restrained from changes the changes in gender roles quickly became inevitableNot So Quiet a novel written by Helena Zenna Smith was written from the point of view of women war workers This novel gives a great insight to the ways women lost femininity due to the conditions of the war 1011 New Women Separate Spheres In her novel Smith was able to express how this happened Smith showed the ways women challenged gender roles became independent and questioned their rights Throughout the nineteenth century women were given very little opportunity outside of domestic responsibilities While men were the strong rational workers women were to stay at home and were considered to be emotional and weak 1011 New Women Separate Spheres It was not until the First World War when women workers were needed that these ideas changed As Hubertine Auclert wrote in Votes for Women everyone has the same inherent rights Gender does not confer particular prerogatives given that moral and intellectual qualities are independent of sex One cannot convince people today that being a man extends his intellectual faculties while being a woman restricts hers Auclart para 8 Through the character Nellie Z Smith Smith was able to show how women involved in the war were not weak and emotional but strong and intelligent Many of the women involved in World War I were doing what Smith described to be mens-workSmith was able to show the ambulance drivers intelligence through Nellie while
