When capitalism emerged in Western Europe and the United States the traditional division of labor between the sexes and the technique of hierarchical control created the sex ordered division of labor in the wage labor system Men controlling the labor of women in the family as Heidi Hartman discusses is patriarchy Men learned the techniques of hierarchical organization and control by controlling the futures of these women Hartman 1976 231 Although the idea of capitalism is to eradicate segregation between the sexes women are still considered inferior in the labor market Hartman 1976231-232 Job segregation by gender effects women in many aspects of their lives By earning lower wages women are forced to depend on men who can support them thus they are encouraged to marry After marriage women must perform domestic chores for their husbands Men benefit then from both higher wages and the domestic division of labor Hartman 1976 232 The domestic division of labor declines the womens ability to function in the labor market This can be considered a patriarchy since the man is in control of the womens labor At a time when women need to jump into the workforce and provide stability for their families the jobs have become scarce for them The higher paying jobs women used to hold have been transferred overseas to low income countries One example of this is in the industry of apparel where women worked the majority of the factories Now they are out of work because their jobs were transferred to countries that allow lower wages Even in occupations that women dominate men are getting an upper hand On a chart in the article America Who Stole the Dream it shows that female elementary school teachers make eighty-eight cents for every dollar that men make The same is true in most professions women are paid less than men for doing the same job The only jobs that pay men and women the same
