In Luke Timothy Johnsons Getting a Christian Experience religious experience is defined using four terms These terms include response to the ultimate involving the whole person peculiar intensity and issues in action My experience was not a physical experience but a reactionary experience of an event that my parents experienced My experience follows Johnsons definition of a religious experience with varying degree in each of his categoriesBoth of my parents are from small towns in Ireland more than thirty minutes away from any large town or city When I was 13 they were involved in a serious car accident The accident occurred late at night and involved a cow that had escaped from a field and was located at a curve in the road My father did not see the cow until already in the turn and had barely started breaking before hitting the cow My father was only suffered minor flesh wounds and my mother broke her jaw in three places and was knocked unconscious The car had no airbags and neither of them were wearing seat belts Both of them should have suffered more serious injuries and my mother believes that it is a miracle that she walked away from that crash If any internal damage had occurred to them it would have taken at least half an hour for an ambulance to arrive In addition to the thirty minutes cell phones were not common in Ireland at this time so they would have been waiting for someone to drive by and find them This circumstance would mean that even minor internal injuries could have become serious after at least an hour to get to the hospital Johnson describes the response to the ultimate as a transcendent experience or one that is beyond the normal or physical level The distinction that the ultimate is perceived to be such by the experiencer
