Ghana which is in Western Africa is bordered by the Gulf of Guinea Cote dIvoire Burkina Faso and Togo Ghana has rich and varied natural resources These resources are exploited to meet the growing demands of the inhabitants Environmental resources in Ghana are acutely disappearing yet the desire for economic growth is also manifest The unrestrained manner of utilisation of these natural resources has resulted in reversible and irreversible changes within the environment Still surprisingly little is known about the relative importance given environmental and socioeconomic issues among residents within Ghana Environmental destruction remains a global issue in this period of industrialization and technological development Ghana with its vast natural resources is faced with many environmental challenges The following are some of these environmental challengesFirst and foremost pollution of the atmosphere and global warming is a major environmental challenge in Ghana Ghana generally enjoys clean atmospheric conditions However emissions from sources such as vehicles industries refuse damps and dusts from uncoated roads etc tend to create atmospheric pollutants within their immediate environments Global warming or the greenhouse effect is an environmental issue that deals with the potential for global climate change due to increased levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases There are certain gases such as carbon dioxide in our atmosphere that serve to regulate the amount of heat that is kept close to the earths surface The more these gases the hotter the earth becomes This causes climate change As climate changes the probabilities of certain types of weather events are affected Floods and droughts will become more common Climate change is expected to have the most severe impact on water supplies Shortages in future are likely to threaten food production reduce sanitation hinder economic development and damage ecosystemsAnother environmental challenge facing Ghana is the pollution of Fresh Water and poor sanitation Available data suggests that Ghana is not under water stress Indeed surface water resources including the Volta Lake constitute about 5 per cent
