The Gothic style of writing increases the plot line producing a more suspenseful and attention-grabbing story Both Wilde and Plaths works has many Gothic elements aggrandizing the story line These two well-written works of literature include many well-defined examples of the Gothic mood voice and imagery The poem Mirror and the novella The Picture of Dorian Gray incorporate the Gothic style by their vocabulary allusion and the use of melodrama In the poem and the novella the vocabulary is a major part of the Gothic mood Plaths well usage of vocabulary is evidently noticeable when she says Just as it is unmisted by love or dislike3 Plath provides this line with a sense of coolness and smooth transition by using the word unmisted It adds a sense of tranquility to the poem easing pain Similarly Wilde uses great descriptive vocabulary especially when describing the portrait of Dorian The sodden eyes had kept something of the loveliness of their blue the noble curves had not yet completely passed away from chiseled nostrils and from plastic throat147 These thoughts rushed through Basils head as he saw the portrait for the first and last time The vocabulary used in this sentence is exquisite it adds much description and portrays a detailed picture of the corrupted portrait Both authors are very talented in writing with strong vocabulary contributing to the Gothic mood The Gothic voice is also well depicted in both pieces of literature by using allusion Both Plath and Wilde allude to many things in their work but mainly about a narcissist In Mirror the epitome of the poem is describing a narcissistic woman but Plath never comes out directly and mentions it rather it is an allusion The same goes for The Picture of Dorian Gray as seen when Wilde writes Dorian Gray had been poisoned by a book139 Wilde is saying that not literally was Dorian poisoned by the book rather his personality was reinforcing
