Several events over the past year have brought into focus a serious medical condition that is becoming more prevalent in the US and our lack of direction in how to deal with it Back in March of this year a challenge was administered to the Department of Health and Human Services involving the long standing statue concerning gender reassignment surgery and if Medicare should pay for it Following this a couple of court cases have also emphasized issues with gender disorders including Californias new law that allows transgendered students to use whichever bathroom and locker rooms they choose based on their gender identity and not based on their physical gender Most recently the case of BradleyChelsea Manning the US Army private sentenced to 35 years in prison that has requested the Army pay for his hormone therapy while in prison These events have made strides in human rights but have stirred up quite a bit of controversy over treatment of gender identity disorder and how this treatment is paid forThe Department of Health and Human Services reached out to the public earlier this year for input on whether or not a policy change should be made to allow for gender reassignment surgery for people on Medicare The challenge was issued on behalf of a transgendered veteran who was denied surgery despite the backing of her doctors in order to treat gender dysphoria While Health and Human Services quickly withdrew their request later the same day they did state that the ban on sex reassignment surgery would be reviewed based on current studies into gender dysphoria What exactly is gender dysphoria Gender dysphoria occurs when there is a difference between a persons gender identity and their physical sex they are born with It is a serious medical condition and can be found in the Gender Identity Disorders Section in the DSM IV that was published in 1994
