Group therapy is extremely vast in the countless ways it can be used and applied The types of groups can range from psycho-educational psychodynamic mindfulness approach For this paper I will focus on Art Therapy groups with both the benefits and reactions towards them Group can be used as support or treatment for any issue and with any population A few of the most common types of groups include substance abuse work in schools hospitals the variety is endless This is because the idea of being in a group is being supportive there is nothing static about group dynamics they are the palpable lifeof the group and no two groups are exactly the same Riley p2 Group Art therapy allows for connection support and as well as other benefitsGroup Art therapy dates back to World War II In both the United States and the United Kingdom psychiatric hospitals began utilizing an open studio type of group for processing The patients would come in with their own schedule and create images without much interaction of others Waller 353 From there Group Art Therapy began to expand in the 1970s when interaction and communication became part of these groups Since this time this approach has developed in the most common types of groups known as open studio theme based group analytic art therapy art psychotherapy groups Lieberman p13-15The first art therapy group to begin consisted of a studio-based model For this the group would assemble and create are together By doing so the influence of others became important as did both the process and product Rubin p275 For the studio approach participants are part of a non-directive group therefore they are able to work on ongoing projects with materials and themes of their own choice Macholdi 351 Each participant is surrounded by others who are each in their individual process in a collective environment This was the type of groups that was most utilized originally for
