Infants are quite remarkable in that they demonstrate more potential and ability at birth than anyone ever thought possible Like adults infants learn by taking information in through their senses The primary senses are taste smell touch sight and hearing During the first three months an infants socialization is based around the activities of feeding sleeping elimination and body positioning The infant also begins learning the skill of self-regulation This means that when there is too much stimulation they will tune it out and when something is interesting they will become aroused The infant will do such things as react to paper being put over his or her face and show recognition to mother or any other familiar and favorite caregivers Allen and Marotz 2008Sometime between four and six months of age the infant begins exchanging interactions with the caregiver The child may smile in response to being smiled at They start to play simple back and forth games such as peek-a-boo The infant also begins cooperating with spoon-feeding dressing and other daily activities Common behaviors you might see include smiling at themselves in the mirror discriminating strangers from familiar people working for a toy out of reach and reaches for themselves in a mirror Erickson identifies babies between the ages of zero and twelve months to be in the trust versus mistrust stage This means that they will develop trust and love for their caregivers because they are given adequate love and nurturing from their environment or will develop mistrust and indifference for people and the world because they are not given those resourcesRemember no two infants develop exactly the same but infants do tend to follow a fairly predictable course of social development You might be concerned about your childs development if your child does not perform the following actions showing alarm or startle in response to loud noises sucking and swallowing with ease showing a gain in height weight
