If I was given a grant to purchase a book we ready for my own classroom I would have a very hard time trying to choose just one We have read so many great books this semester and each book has a different purpose However thinking about the overall impact the book would have I would have to choose Harriet The Spy I would choose Harriet The Spy because it displays a sense of realism it confronts topics about gender and it also has themes throughout the novel that are relevant todayHarriet The Spy is considered to be a realistic childrens text This means that the story could actually happen in real life I think that it is very important for children to exposed to this kind of literature Having a sense of realism in novels helps better connect the student to the book They can relate to the book better because they feel that the things happening in the book can also maybe happen to them since it is realistic and deals with real life issues Having the students being able to relate to the novel will actually have them interested in reading it If the students are interested in reading the novel that will only help them perform better when it comes to class discussions and testing over the material presented in the book Since I would be the teacher in this case having the students do well while also being able to enjoy the book would be my ultimate goal for any book that I would present to my class I believe that Harriet The Spy can do just thatThroughout the duration of the novel there are many references explicitly stated about gender and gender roles I think that the topic of gender should be presented to elementary aged students because they should know about what gender actually is and what gender roles are in our society Elementary aged students are at
