United States hospitals are growing in popularity for childbirth and the prevention and protection that they have set up in case of an emergency in delivering a child have significantly improved over the past centuries The problem however is that doctors are relying on systematic medical procedures that unfortunately lead to life-threatening medical interventions that are not always necessary The Business of Being Born A huge factor that led to the systematic procedures that doctors are using during labor is the new developments in obstetrics and neonatal medicine that began in the 19th through the 21st centuries In addition to the improvements in medicine sociocultural factors influenced the mindset with which obstetricians were trained to view childbirth as a medical framework that requires urgent interventions These key factors exemplify the connection to the significant change in the medicalization transformation in obstetric carePrior to the 18th century midwives and birth attendants were the only people who were able to deliver a child unless the presence of physicians and surgeons were urgently needed Brodsky 86 Many countries including the United States began to question and illegalize midwifery even accusing midwifes of performing witchcraft to relieve labor pains during child birthing Borst 1 Little did they know that these pain relievers would essentially become a modern medical use in the obstetric care today In the early 18th century men began to advance midwifery and gained knowledge in physiology of pregnancy and labor thus creating the birthing tool forceps Forceps invented by Peter Chamberlen was a birthing tool that was created to help pull the baby out of the womens vagina Wertz and Wetrz 34 As a result forceps became a widely used birthing tool in obstetrics in the 1730s and have saved countless lives Romails 16 However the use of forceps inflicted injury to the baby This method would crush the babys head and tear the mothers soft tissues causing hemorrhage or an infection Brodsky 55 To shorten
