"Your exploration of the social and cultural themes is detailed and underscores for the reader your engagement with the two versions of the story. There are some confusing elements within the current draft that I think can be amended for a more clear or purposeful next draft. The first is in making sure your purpose is clear earlier on. Note that your opening refers to a book and then a movie, with the latter not receiving an explicit introduction. I recommend taking the time to establish which texts you are using (the novel and the film) and also making sure they are involved, specifically, in the thesis statement. In the body paragraphs, keep the reader posted by letting them know when you referencing the book or the movie--or both. Another aspect that should be clarified is where statements about history or what life was like are coming from--from research or are they derived from the two texts under analysis? Signposting will really help keep all this straight.

The second point of confusion is the setting, which you locate pretty early in history. Can you double-check this? There may be an argument to be made for the ongoing presence of tradition and custom, but the novel itself is set at the start of the twentieth century. Taking this into account, do some brainstorming to see how you can work with this as you move forward."
