For a long period of time it was considered a completely ethical andreasonable practice to remove Aboriginal children from their familieswith the ideology to advance their education and to assimilate them intothe Western culture which had made recent advancements into Australia As Fr Alphonse Bleischwitz - the superintendent at the old Balgo campfrom 1939-1957 stated we hope in the near future to have a school forthe children where they will be educated both in religious and secularmatters McCoy 2007 p50 His ideology was that the missions wereto convert Aborigines to Christianity and to teach the children in theWestern ways Those who were supporters of this movement viewed theseizing of children as a good thing as it gave the Aboriginal childrenwho were almost viewed as feral a chance to be considered normalactive members of the new Western society There are strong argumentsstating that it was best to assimilate the Aboriginal population thebest they could and the way to do that was to start with the children It began with children of mixed parents they were removed from theirfamilies and sent to missions like Balgo and Beagle Bay to helptrain them The missionaries saw it as their duty to segregate thechildren based on the parentage and teach them to behave a specific waythat appropriately fits the culture and education based on the Westernideologies McCoy 2007 At the beginning of the movement a policy wasformed to make it legal to take mixed-blood Aborigines at the time ofthe childrens removal from their families they legally became childrenof the state By the 1930s the state had custody of virtually all ofthe Aboriginal children in Australia The main concern that theWesterners were trying to solve was the half-caste problem that came toexistence due to intercultural contact that resulted in the birth ofmany children Their objective was to remove the colour of the mindand body by sending them to camps where they were sent
