Beauty pageants have evolved over the years after World War 2 pageants were made to represent the ideal woman a feminine wife like keeper of the household But now pageants have different selection criteria It all depends on how women are perceived in society Traits can range from strong and independent to soft and feminine The winner of pageants will be recognized as successful and beautiful and will embody all of the previously listed traits An example of a pageant that operates in this manner would be the Miss America Pageant It is a pageant in which winners represent the ideal woman People are constantly instigating on the rumor of pageants are for the most beautiful people in the country Though beauty plays an important part the year and definition of an ideal woman in this year play a bigger part In 1921 Margeret Gorman won the very first beauty pageant She looked like Mary Pickford who was the biggest star of the day and this was the ideal woman of 1921 Thus the ideal woman and year play a big part Pageants are competitions that mainly focus on the physical beauty talent intelligent and becoming an ambassador to women all around the world Miss America Pageants started out as a promotional gimmick by Atlantic City businessmen in 1921 to keep tourists in town after Labor Day Miss America Pageant is a national tradition dedicated to defining the ideal American woman In order to uphold some of the messages that dominate the time the hosts of Miss America televise the event to the country and critique how each contest is judged This is the message that gets conveyed during beauty pageants Overall Miss America has been able to remain popular during conservative times such as the 20s - 80s because of the fact that each year the ideal woman of America changes and the excitement of televising it to the nation to see and wait
