Harriet Tubman was an American bondwoman who escaped from slavery in the South to become a leading abolitionist before the American Civil War She was born in Maryland in 1820 and successfully escaped in 1849 Yet she returned many times to rescue both family members and non-relatives from the plantation system She led hundreds to freedom in the North as the most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad an elaborate secret network of safe houses organized for that purpose Some people referred to her as Moses Minty or General TubmanInspired by Harriet Tubman Blake Gains an American slave contributed to freeing slaves during the 1800s Blake Gains was born a free man but was captured and brought into slavery in 1821 In his early life he was born in Maryland just like Harriet Tubman In 1807 he married a woman by the name of Elizabeth Ira Mount and had two children Sasha and Christopher Blake and Elizabeth were meant for each otherIn 1821 in the middle of the night two men broke into Blakes house and killed his wife and the two children and captured Blake and took him into slavery Blake lost his freedom the woman he loved and his two kids He witnessed other slaves being brutally beaten raped and killed In 1822 he created a plan to escape from slavery Blake spoke out for all the people and told them I want freedom I want freedom which he preached to the other slaves in the church
