In todays society our knowledge is tested by various standardized testand one of the many test is the IQ test How could we be so sure thatthis test is valid How do we know that this test is confirmatory of ourknowledge We take this test without knowledge of its development howit is put together how it is calculated or what the acronym IQactually means The only thing we are conscious of is that the higherour IQ score is the smarter we are Lets take a look at the historyand development of the IQ test During the late 1800s French psychologist Alfred Binet 1857 - 1911was asked by the minister of public education in France to evolve ameasurement of intelligence that would identify children who neededspecial assistance withing their learning environment To differentiatethe levels of education each task was assigned to an age level Thetest would begin with the youngest age level and progress in sequenceuntil the tasks could no longer be done The last task that the childwould reach became what they called their mental age A childsgeneral intellectual age was calculated subtracting his mental age fromtheir true chronological ageAfter Binets attempt German psychologist W Stern revised Binetscalculations in 1912 Stern believed that it would give a betterestimate of degree of deficiency if they would divide the childschronological age by their mental age Sterns way of calculating mentalage brought some downfall it would yield a fraction He then decidedthat in order for him to calculate a whole number he would have tomultiply the quotient by 100 By doing so Stern developed the conceptof what we know as the intelligence quotient IQMany people would like to believe that IQ scores are actualdeterminants of their knowledge and typically it is used as validmeasurements in todays society I personally do not believe that IQtest are valid measurements of intelligence level I strictly agree withBinets belief As he stated Gould 1981 p151 Intelligence is nota single
