Slavery has existed for centuries even before the first slaves came to America Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to North America colony of Jamestown Virginia in 1619 to aid in the production of such profitable crops as cotton indigo and tobacco etc Slavery was introduced in the 17th and 18th centuries the African Americans assisted the new colonies to build a new nation The invention of all the materials that the African Americans solidified assisted the importance of slavery to the Souths economy Slaves were brought from Africa by ships that then came to America African Americans were packed tight into the ships hardly ever given food and water They were then brought in deck to clean and then to be cleaned by the men throwing water on them A basic slave ship carried at least 200 and at most 500 slaves when the ships departed A third of all ships cargo made it to America Slaves were sickened by others and crops would have gone bad The slaves were simply part of the cost of doing business Over the time period of slavery there were around 20 million slaves that had been transported to America Slaves were overly abuse on their voyage to AmericaThe slave trade was a business that helped to build the growing economies of northern seaports like Bristol and supported the economies of many towns along the New England coast or further inland Slave traders paid shipbuilders insurers blacksmiths and a wide variety of other tradesmen merchants and farmers New York financial institutions were heavily invested in slavery Almost every business and industry in the region traded or did business with merchants or shippers whose wealth was generated by slavery In addition those who invested in slaving voyages came from almost all walks of life while wealthy families were often significant investors smaller shares in voyages would be owned by ordinary tradesmen and artisans
