The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal but what about women Since the start of the United States a womans traditional role was that of wife and mother and most womens lives were centered on their household responsibilities Many women werent even aware of how unequal they were and how poorly they were treated they were just so used to living that way that it became normal to them Men were thought to be superior because women were perceived as being weaker and less intelligent Even today women are discriminated against in the workplace and they arent even allowed to make choices about their own bodies Throughout most of history women in most societies were treated as though they were inferior to men because they were thought to be the weaker sex Kendall Gustafson highlights in Womens Movement that this situation was often justified as being the natural result of biological differences between the sexes From the beginning the fact that only women give birth to children and nurse infants helped establish a division of tasks between men and women Women have traditionally assumed most of the responsibility for taking care of the children Men on the other hand have been free to work at greater distances from their families Gustafson Also women werent even allowed to own their things or property get an education have church leadership or participate in civil government When women got married the money she had when she was single became her husbands she had no legal right to money she earned A couples children were also believed to be owned by the husband not the mother who gave birth to the child Men thought women didnt need an education more than being able to read to take care of their children and household so women remained uneducated while men were learning new things Also women werent supposed to express their opinions only men were allowed
