Throughout the Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield is searching for a source of comfort because he feels alone at a boarding school that is full of phonies without his family Holdens hat which he buys in moment of loneliness becomes a symbol for protection and comfort He puts on the hat when he feels uncomfortable and takes it off when he is comfortable By the end of the novel Holden through the symbol of the carousel realizes that everyone must grow up and learn from his mistakes which provided him with the comfort he was looking for Holden is searching for a source of comfort In the Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger Holden has gotten kicked out of multiple schools and has recently been kicked out of another school Pencey Prep Holden is lonely because he is away from his family and he doesnt like all of the phonies that go there to Pencey It was pretty nice to get back to my room after I left old Spencer because everybody was down at the game Salinger 24 The quote shows how Holden in a way doesnt have many friends to hang out with and this is why he is lonely If Holden had friends and was happy he would be down at the football game instead of in his room In addition to Holden feeling lonely he also feels like Pencey is full of phonies They advertise in about a thousand magazines always showing some hot-shot guy on a horse jumping over a fence Like as if all you ever did at Pencey was play polo all the time I never even once saw a horse anywhere near the placeSalinger 4 The quote is of Holden telling us how the school is pretty much lying about themselves One thing Holden hates the most is phonies and at Pencey he feels like the school is full of them The
