Art Spiegelman graphic novel Maus I My Father Bleeds History and Maus II And Here My Troubles Began portrays the survival story of his father Vladek Spiegelman and demonstrates Arts experiences as a son of Holocaust survivors through his choice of graphics color and typeface All of which are important because theyre what makes this novel have such a strong impact on the readers Maus I and II are about the recounting story of Vladek from how we came to meet his wife Anja to the moment that they found each other after the war was finally over Including the short comic strip of Anjas suicide in 1968 Maus I introduces all the main character giving the survival story of how Vladek along his family and friends struggled through the beginning of the war before being separated into various camps Maus II completes Vladeks survival story with a strong emphasis on the many struggles Art in particularly when putting the story together to capture every final detail and understanding his fathers emotions Art Spiegelman chose an interesting choice of graphic imagery for his novel by differentiating each characters race with a different animal But it can also be supported with historical value which overall gives a stronger meaning Jews in Germany at the time of WWII were seen as mice Jews are the rats carrying the disease through the world Spiegelman Interview Nazis Germans hunted down the Jews as cats hunt mice for the same cause of elimination The Americans later take over represented as dogs because they hunted the Nazis to take responsibility of their actions Pigs represented the Polish for the obvious reason that the Polish had the same mentality as the Nazis therefore were considered dirty and then there where some who came out as helping the Jews but would turn them in without remorse A clear example is seen in the end of the first novel where Vladek and Anja
