It is difficult for any person to be perfect But it is even more difficult for a woman to live up to the harsh standards set forth in Denmark in William Shakespeares play Hamlet Something is rotten in Denmark Marcellus is correct in this statement However the most rotten aspect of Denmark is the treatment of women in Denmark and the view of held on women especially Hamlets views of womenHamlet is left to his thoughts and feelings following his talk with Gertrude and Claudius Hamlet reflects on King Hamlets status versus Claudius status and in his mind comparing the two is like comparing Hyperion to a satyr Shakespeare 12144 Hyperion the sun god being King Hamlet and a satyr a half goat half man creature given to beastly and sexual tendencies being Claudius For Hamlet it is obvious that King Hamlet is far above Claudius in status and rank and so he does not understand how Gertrude could settle for the likes of a satyrLater when Hamlet encounters the ghost of his father for the first time the ghost talks of how he was unjustly murdered by Claudius Eventually the conversation moves to Gertrude The ghosts claim is that Gertrude is the type of woman to content herself with marriage to a god like him and then upon his death will pray on garbage Shakespeare 1564 in the form of sex with Claudius This affirms the idea that Hamlet gets his ideas of women not only from Gertrude and Ophelia but also from the ghost of King Hamlet This is because Hamlet feels similarly about Gertrudes hasty connection to ClaudiusHamlet is still at odds odds over his fathers death and neither Gertrude nor Claudius says anything of comfort to him while he is in this state of despair The two leave Hamlet feeling frustrated and depressed and Hamlet reflects on Gertrudes move from King Hamlet to Claudius Hamlet thinks frailtyis woman because Gertrude latches
