America was not born the land of the free but fought for freedom and democracy from foreign tyranny America was the land of equal opportunity where one could come and any dream was possible with hard work and ingenuity But these dreams and desires turned to darker places for some men When capitalism took hold some only looked to pad their books and secure their financial wellbeing at the expense of others American businessmen plot and manipulated to overthrow governments that only offense was they prevented some mens financial gain American businessmen and corporations manipulated American foreign policy for Hawaii Cuba Nicaragua and Honduras to ensure their financial wealth and security at the expense of the local population which the US Government should not have condonedIn the independent Kingdom of Hawaii American and European sugar planters prospered during the mid to late nineteenth century The only barrier to greater success was American tariffs on imported sugar With carful manipulation and an accommodating king Hawaiian sugar planters were able to coax King Kalakaua of Hawaii to sign a reciprocity treaty with the US in 1876 Kinzer 14 The treaty granted America rights to have a military base and provided free trade between the two nations The Hawaiian sugar planters had everything they needed They had created an expedited path to American markets while competitors from other nations had to take the slower toll roads In the fourteen years after the treaty was signed Hawaiian sugar exports grew tenfold Kinzer 14 But the sugar planters uninhibited success came to an abrupt end with the end of American tariffs and the implementation of the American sugar grower bounty The bounty provided American sugar planters cash incentive per pound to grow sugar Two years later Hawaiian export profits dropped nearly 30 percent Kinzer 15 After losing their economic leg up to their mainland competitors Hawaiian sugar planters led by Lorrin Thurston sought to place their businesses back on track
