Caroline Gordon had many influences in her life from her editor to the writing group she was in to the various authors she met during her lifetime The person that influenced her writing the most was her husband Allen Tate a writer himself Though she loved him dearly they got divorced and after their second divorce she did not see him again Although she did not see him at all after their second divorce his influence could still be felt in her writing Her story Tom Rivers also shows that even though the physical connection is gone with somebody the things they taught you and the feelings they left you with wont go away if they were important The narrator in the story Tom Rivers aptly describes how one person can have an effect on your life It is then that Tom Rivers name will be mentioned Infrequently I say One or two summers will go by and I have always that start half pleasure half pride and I realize that no matter whether I hear his name or not he I never out of my memory Gordon 25 Here the narrator is saying that even though that he hasnt heard Toms name in a while let alone have seen him when he does get to think about Tom he has good memories Not only does he have pleasure but he has pride He is proud of those memories that he has with Tom because they are so favorable The narrator proceeds to explain the time he spent with Tom being able to remember the mot minute detail that he had with him showing how much he remembers of his time with Tom I remember that I felt a little proud to be accepted as an equal to Tom who must have twenty-two or three to my eighteen Gordon 29 The narrator is pleased by the fact
