We perceive by selecting what we want to focus our attention on organizing the information into a more understandable pattern inside of the mind and interpreting what it means Culture gender and personality influence the way we perceive others What I am mainly going to discuss in my paper is the topic of impression formation Impression formation informs us about how we look at people when we first encounter them I chose to reflect on this subject partially because of my personal experience of making a first impression of a person both positive and negative but primarily because I have always needed to understand how to build myself up so that people would have a more confident first impression of me First impressions are critical because they influence how we will respond when we come in contact with them againAn interpersonal impression is a mental picture of who people are and how we feel about them p95 So to go into further detail we will talk about how we begin to perceive people We use something called a Gestalt which is when we very quickly form an impression of someone that is either positive or negative Once we have our Gestalt formed it requires a lot of contradictory information to change that impression But is it possible to never form a negative impression of someone when we first meet them In 1993 E H Porter published a book called Pollyanna In short the book was about a girl who was happy almost all of the time and she saw the positive side of things even during negative times There is evidence that there is Pollyanna in most people I agree with the Pollyanna principle and I think that if we were all to live like Pollyanna we would be joyful and more grateful for the things we have in our life There are many different ways to form an impression of people In high school
