Children do not chose to develop a certain way since right out of the wound they are being shaped by how their parents treat them Attachments seem to be very crucial since in The developing person through the life span psychology textbook they define attachment as a bond between people starting at birth and solidifying by age 1 influencing their relationships throughout life There are four types of attachment secure preoccupied dismissing avoidant and fearful avoidant Secure individuals have low anxiety and low avoidance with both positive models of the self and see others as accepting and responsive Holmes Johnson Those who are preoccupied have high anxiety and low avoidance and have a negative model of the self and are preoccupied in the need for others to accept them Holmes Johnson Individuals who have a dismissing avoidant attachment have low anxiety but high avoidance which demonstrates discomfort towards intimacy and closeness with others Holmes Johnson Lastly fearful avoidant individuals have both high anxiety and avoidance with negative models of the self and of others they hide their need for intimate and close relationships and so rely on being independent Holmes Johnson As for myself fearful avoidant individuals will try and keep themselves from reaching their full potential making it the worst type of attachment a child could develop Since at birth children cannot control how they will develop parents need to realize it is wrong for them to raise a child who has formed a fearful avoidant attachment because of sexual abuse as it will immensely affect them as they grow and try to form relationships and live their life Abuse can leave a scar for a lifetime Sexual abuse is defined as any act upon a child by a significantly older person with the intent to stimulate the child sexually and to satisfy the aggressors sexual impulses Oliver Chouchena et al When children are abused at a young age
