This article immediately reminded me of recent events Unless you were in dimention X September 11 2001 stirs up images of pain terror and loss While America was in cahoots President George W Bush was running for cover assuring citizens that the government is okay and running as usual A prime concern for most citizens who lost friends and family Im sure The President decided not to stand beside New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani as Giuliani surveyed the damage conversed with bystanders and those directly involved and began the extensive task of picking up the pieces of the tragedy At a time when America needed him most Bush was hiding out ensuring his safety above all others he did not choose to address the people of New York in person but rather the nation as a whole Bush failed to address those affected on a personal note which would have indicated compassion that he truly cared for those suffering and felt for them I believe this is much the same as the approach takenby Lawrence G Rawl of Exxon Corporation regarding the incident involving the 1989 oil spill in Alaska With Exxon and Ashland Inc both companies suffered tremendous blows to their operation The difference is how they dealt with their situation Ashland Inc realized that accepting responsibility for the spill and taking actions to correct the problem would up the tarnished public perception which is virtually everything Although Ashland Inc footed over fifty million dollars for clean up and lawsuits in the end they really saved money and their own butts because if public image dropped for the company sales would plummet and Ashland Inc just as Exxon would be headed for financial difficulty It goes to show that footing the bill for good PR practitioners and actually listening to them will benefit the company Sometimes the little extra is what will save your company from events like the Exxon and Ashland
