For many years farmers have been using hydrogen peroxide to increase crop yields They suggest mixing five to sixteen ounces of 35 hydrogen peroxide with twenty gallons of water for every acre of land Botanists suggest mixing one ounce of 3 hydrogen peroxide with a quart of water to improve the health of plants The farmers solution calculates to be between a 068 and a 217 percent concentration of hydrogen peroxide while the botanists solution calculates to be about a 1765 concentrationIn my experiment I will mix progressive amounts of a 3 hydrogen peroxide solution with water and use this to water tomato plants over a 31 day period while periodically measuring their growth This should tell me whether or not hydrogen peroxide is beneficial to plants and if there is an optimal concentration which facilitates maximum plant growth I expect the plants receiving higher levels of hydrogen peroxide to grow larger than those receiving less hydrogen peroxide because the increased oxygen in the soil will help plants to absorb more nutrients Although farmers suggest using a 35 solution I am using a 3 solution because it is cheaper more readily available and is the maximum concentration I will be using for this experimentNaturally hydrogen peroxide exists in rain The ozone layer consists of ozone which has three molecules of oxygen Because ozone is highly unstable it can easily release an atom of oxygen This extra atom bonds with water in the air and creates hydrogen peroxide which falls to Earth in the form of rainwater Oxygen is released from the hydrogen peroxide in the form of O2 and absorbed by the plant increasing its oxygenation This is one reason why rainwater appears to be more effective than regular tap water in growing plants In plants hydrogen peroxide can increase the available oxygen encourage rooting and boosts protein development which speeds up the plants metabolism thus increasing growth and health The equation for the release
