How is Imprisonment beneficial Who is the beneficiary These are only some of the questions that come to my mind when you speak of Americas Prisons From my point of view imprisonment can be beneficial to everyone Its true to say our prison system is not a full proof plan to keep Americas worst off the streets but nothing is perfect in this world but I do believe the benefits of imprisonment far out ways the negative effects imprisonment has on our society According to Americas Prisons a book about opposing view points of Americas Prison system there are four types of benefits to imprisonment retribution deterrence rehabilitation and incapacitation Retribution demonstrates to an individual punishment from society Deterrence may cause an individual to think twice before he commits a crime Rehabilitation tries to help an individual help himself succeed once he gets out of prison and Incapacitation prevents the individual from committing crimes that he otherwise could commit if he was on the street or to put it another way a thug in prison cant shoot your sister However these are not the only benefits prisons have The price for prison maintenance is a piece of the pie compared to the cost of crime on our society A study conducted by the National Institute of Justice estimates the cost of prison including parole and probation programs to be 40 billion dollars a year Compare that to the annual cost crime has on our society which the study estimates to be 500 billion dollars I think this is a small price to pay to keep Americas criminals off the street Prisons not only cut the expenses crime has on our society tremendously it plays a role in reducing crime in our society According to the book Americas Prisons In 1989 there were an estimated 66000 fewer assaults 323000 fewer robberies 380000 fewer assaults and 33 million fewer burglaries attributable to the
