Looking at the past three generations in just my family alone its pretty obvious how parenting has changed From disciplining how we put our kids to sleep and even how we feed them these days is different than how it was when my mother or I were growing up Much of the information we used to base our decisions on was from the experience of others or old wives tales passed on through the generations Today we still have the same old wives tales floating around but now we also have tons of scientific studies that tell us we were doing it wrong for so long Since my daughter was born three months ago Ive been trying to find a balance between what my doctor tells me and what my family advises me to doIve seen pictures of my parents and I as babies in our cribs Decked out with stuffed animals pillows crib bumpers you name it None of which are present in my own daughters crib per her pediatricians recommendation due to the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS To top it off when I was an infant the doctors recommended babies sleep on their stomach Now this is considered putting your baby at high risk for SIDS Its a wonder I ever survived with how much things have changed Its definitely hard to explain to your 83 year old grandmother that you Dont do that anymore Because what does she say Well look at your father He turned out just fine My grandmother and father both have been telling me to put cereal in my babys bottle since she was 3 weeks old NOT doctor recommended these days My grandmother says Well hell I was giving your dad a little taste of some mashed potatoes and gravy by then Well grandma there were a lot of things you used to do that are not supposed to be done anymore According to
