Wallace Bacon a recipient of an honorary doctorate from Emerson College in 1975 wrote that the liberal arts or humanities are concerned with the question of what makes life worth living And that question concerns not simply oneself but others The humanities must help us learn who we are they must help us learn the otherness of others In this light describe an encounter with someone or something differentan other which revealed to you your sense of self and your relation to humanity This encounter may involve a person place culture or text book speech film play etcHumanities happen to be my favorite area of research This is because they are not universal like mathematics or the sciences Literature Sociology History and Filmography all shed light on varying points-of-view The experiences of others can be expressed across a wide range of media and those experiences can change a spectators individuality Personally I have been most affected by stories told through film but not just any films The films that I consider to be inspirational are ones that have a distinct style One film that sticks out in my mind as being unique is the Quentin Tarantino masterpiece Kill Bill The two-volume work has been a very strong influence on my choice to become a film major Quentin Tarantino is known for his whimsical but also gory style Kill Bill perfectly showcases this across multiple genres The spaghetti-westernkung-fu action flick is so bold in its stylistic choices that it is hard not to be influenced by it I admire Tarantino because he had the courage to say no to the conventions of action films and was able to be so different and wild When I saw the film for the first time I was floored I couldnt believe that a film could go from a desert to an anime-style scene within minutes Not only was the cinematography en pointe but the music brought to life
