It is day outside but pitch black in the theatre Set in the early 70s where thousands of Australians marched through streets chanting the anti-war slogan lets make love not war in support of ending the Vietnam war the play Cosi is set in a burnt out theatre where the matters of love fidelity loyalty politics and trust are revealed in the mental institution and wider Australian Community Lewis being the main character in the play Cosi anyway is the character who evolves through his experiences the most He begins his journey from being a hesitant 22 year old male character that is unsure whether he is doing the right thing by taking the role to direct a group of madmen in a mental institution to a character that experiences a different world beyond his own and transforms through his experiences in Cosi His intention was for the money only The journey that Lewis makes as a character who seesviews love as irrelevant to finally view love as very important is the central meaning to the play Cosi The issue of the societys perception of mental illness and the attitudes towards the Vietnam War are seen through the characters of the play CosiHowever not all characters in the play cosi develop through their experiences in Cosi Lucy and Nick dont change their attitudes against free love and Doug does not overcome his Pyromania They are normal people who have done extraordinary things thought extraordinary thoughts You are getting a good bunch When Lewis was given the role to direct a group of madmen in a mental institution The characters begin their journey as Through Cosi each character is stopped by something that prevents them from coming out of their shells Through their experiences of acting an Italian opera that portrays the unfaithfulness of women the characters come in to terms Cosi Fan Tutte a play within a play was the inspired choice
