It is a natural thing for developing societies to have devastating epidemics occur These tragedies have been taking place for thousands of years and have caused many communities to crumble An excellent example of these occurrences would be the Middle Ages During the late 700s to the mid-14th century the medieval empire struggled to thrive It seemed that everything was getting in the way causing difficulties when trying to advance Major events struck Europe during the 1300s that began deflating the medieval society The forces working against the people of this time were the Bubonic Plague and the Hundred Years War In the 1300s an epidemic struck Europe This disease spreading all the way from Asia was known as the Bubonic Plague The occurrence of the Bubonic Plague wiped out approximately one third of Europes population Unlike some situations where struggles brought communities together this was completely opposite This illness was so terrifying to the people and in turn it ripped apart the fabric of society The Plague came to Europe through merchants from Asia The disease was known as Black Death in Asia because of the purplish blackish spots it would leave on the skin Rats were another carrier of the Bubonic Plague Due to the fact that most people did not bathe regularly it was not uncommon for most of the town to have lice or fleas Another factor that did not help was that the people of Europe found it acceptable to hurl their garbage and waste into the streets setting up a perfect breeding ground for these diseased rats The plague seemed like it whipped through Europe in no time at all After four years the plague had hit every part of the continent and was spreading south into North Africa It frightened the people of Europe and it impacted them harshly in all aspects of their lives Due to the rapid distribution of the Bubonic Plague the communities were unprepared
