Although the novel and the play were written in two completely different eras there are several similarities in women gender roles In these two different societies women have been always portrayed the weaker sex this is seen right at the begging of the play when Sampson sais women being the weaker vessels The word Weaker gives the reader a great image of women roles from mens prospectiveMoreover Men thought that women ought to accept standards and roles that society has placed upon her The hierarchy of society had also a huge impact on womens life rolesIt can be clearly seen that Jane is the main women in the novel and that is due to the title of the book Jane Eyre At the start of the book Jane was as a troubled mistreated unhappy and rejected girl of little beauty or charm but with a propensity for speaking forthrightly and valuing moral behaviour She was constantly mistreated by her uncles family after he passes away this was seen in chapter one when john Reed Mrs Reed son says you are a dependant mama says you have no money you ought to beg when john says mama says shows the reader that Mrs reed was the ruler of the household after her husbands death and she is the one who commands her children and her children obey what she saysFurthermore Jane eventually finds her troubled path smoothed significantly over the years preparing her for the trials and conflicts that come her way as her lifes desires go against the desires of the two principal men who wish to control her choicesIn Romeo and Juliet Juliet holds the principal womans role Juliet is a spoilt cherished young woman of great attraction and beauty But soft what light through yonder window breaksIt is the east and Juliet is the sunIn this extract from his monologue in act 2 scene 2 Romeo elevates Juliet to heavenly
