The main topics I have encountered throughout this semester that can relate to my own experience of language culture and identity are Race and White Public Space by Jane Hill Ebonics Language of Richard Nixon and Bonvillans Language and cultural meaning These readings have pin pointed certain aspects of my everyday language usage Weather I have come across situations that have dealt with the topics at hand or I have witnessed what the readings have manifestWhen people learn second or third or more languages they may learn to properly use the pronunciations words and grammatical patterns of their additional language but they may unconsciously transfer the conversational inferences they learned with their native language into verbal encounters in which they speak a nonnative tongue 50 In Bonvillans Language and cultural meaning part of this chapter relates to my own experience Everyday I watch my parents speak English either directly to me or at another person they are conversing with Since they are nonnative to English you can tell that their accent is still thick even though they have been here in America for more than 20 years In some occasions I have catch my parents using a word that is in originally in Spanish and changing it into an English word but not using the rightful definition when using it For example the word equivocation In English it means a statement that is not literally false but that cleverly avoids an unpleasant truth My father used the word equivocation when he was trying to tell a clerk that no you are wrong Equivocar is the word in Spanish that caused my father to use the word equivocation thinking that the same meaning in Spanish of that word would be translated into the same meaning in EnglishWhites will here accent even when objectivity none is present if they can detect any other signs of a racialized identity Race and White Public Space by Jane Hill When
