When helping a roommate lose weight one will implement both reinforcements and punishments Reinforcements are outcomes that strengthen the probability of a response and punishments are outcomes that weaken the probability of a response Both can be either positive or negative meaning that if the situation is positive a stimulus is administered and if the situation is negative a stimulus is taken away The type of punishment or reinforcement the roommate will receive will depend on how efficiently the roommate performs and completes the tasks at hand If asked to perform a specific task and the task is done wrong then there will be a positive punishment For example if the roommate is asked to do twenty push-ups and then cheats or does the push-ups wrong the positive punishment would be to add more push-ups until the roommate consistently does the push-ups correctly An example of positive reinforcement would be if the roommate continually ate healthy to take them out for yogurt as a reward Reinforcement work well when a discriminative stimulus is established because discriminative stimulus is any stimulus that signals the presence of a reinforcement This in turn allows the stimulus to acquire an almost permanent place in our brains One would not want to implement a lot of punishments because punishments have several disadvantages the first disadvantage only tells a person what not to do instead of what to do The second disadvantage can create anxiety which can interfere with future learning and the third disadvantage can encourage submissive behavior causing a person to become sneakier To decide which type of reinforcement schedule that should be used one must decide between consistency of administering reinforcement which is variable and fixed and basis of administering reinforcement interval and ratio Fixed is a predictable amount and variable is an unpredictable amount Interval is a specific amount of time and ratio is a specific number The schedule used for reinforcement would be variable
