Overcoming the Act of Passing Judgment Our everyday thinking is limited by our seemingly innate tendency to pass judgments on people based on their superficial characteristics It is almost second nature for many people to judge others for how they look how they dress how they act and how they relate with other people David G Myers a professor of psychology at Michigans Hope College and author of the book Psychology asserts that many people are raised in judgmental environments with parents and relatives speaking evil and slander against other people 178 Myers also states that when you grow up in such in atmosphere its only natural to so the same thing Psychology 178 Myers explains that when an individual matures and is able to form hisher own decisions it is important that heshe steers clear from the act of judging others because it encourages prejudice thoughts and discourages the development of a compassionate character Psychology 179 Although passing judgment on others based on their superficial characteristics is a learned act it should not be an essential factor in the way an individual formulates an opinion about anothers individuality As stated in the Constitution of the United States and by other well-founded examples every person should have the right to proclaim their qualities mannerisms and principles before they are judged In todays society people should practice losing their tendencies to judge other people based on their superficial characteristics because it is an irrational response to a learned act that subjects the judged individual to a subordinate status and negative outcomes Popular behavior in society exemplifies how judgmentalism assumes an undeserved role in peoples lives throughout everyday social interactions For example imagine a young man straight out of college with little money to afford business attire He wearing slacks and a collard shirt goes to a stressful job interview for a position he is qualified for and is denied the employment because he was not appropriately
