One of the most important themes throughout the entire novel The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is racism This novel was written around the time of slavery and racism in which Mark Twain used the realist approach of describing what America was like during the 1800s The treatments of blacks as well as the use of the derogatory term nigger were both considered the norm at this time making Huck and Jims relationship accurate Huck helping Jim escape slavery which was illegal was one of the major motives for his moral confusion due to the fact that helping a slave was morally right and socially wrong The theme of racism is repeatedly displayed through the different adventures Huck encounters and shows how he has come to the conclusion that racism as well as slavery is wrong Hucks relationship with Jim develops despite the plot element of racism including Huck overcoming racism in society Hucks friendship with a slave and the stereotypes of blacks Hypocrisy of slavery is an example of how the theme of racism doesnt affect the development of his relationship with Jim Slavery was in many ways morally religiously and humanly wrong with America during the 1800s as Mark Twain thoroughly explains throughout the novel Religious white people were supposed to be good people within society but treating slaves the way they were treated in the novel changes the view of the good white person Mark Twain uses the hypocrisy of slavery to show how white people do not view slavery as wrong compared to blacks like Jim and his family who have to go through the cruelty and injustice of slavery However Huck does contemplate doing the easier thing with Jim by writing a letter to Tom Sawyer to give to Miss Watson On page 227 Huck writes a letter saying Miss Watson your runaway nigger Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville -Huck Finn After writing this
