Whether it is human nature or the natural environment beauty can be found in everything but that does not mean that it is perfect Humans vs nature have been a concept in the past and are seen in recent years as well Joseph Conrads An Outpost of Progress Nathaniel Hawthornes The Birthmark and Edgar Allen Poes A Descent Into the Maelstrom are three stories that show how nature will always have more power in nature in three different ways Not appreciating nature and having the skills to survive is a problem that is brought up in Conrads An Outpost of Progress from 1897 Hawthornes The Birthmark is a story about trying to change the beauty that nature has creating and attempting to create perfection Poes A Descent Into the Maelstrom shows how we are unable to know how to what could happen on a given day and the power that nature possess Although these stories were written centuries ago they can still relate to recent events and stories that there are today In a battle between humans and nature will always have the same outcome nature will always win Surviving an extreme event that nature puts us through is because of luck The outcome of natures events brings up the idea of survival of the fittest It is impossible for someone to be more powerful than nature unless luck is on their side and to create perfectionIn Conrads story An Outpost of Progress the two main characters Kayerts and Carlier are very arrogant and oblivious men They seem to have this idea that they are more powerful and have control over human beings and their surroundings disregarding nature From the beginning of this story Conrad shows the thoughts and the closed mindedness of these individuals The river the forest all the great land throbbing with life were like a great emptiness Even the brilliant sunshine disclosed nothing intelligible Things appeared and disappeared before their eyes
