Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews and Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones reveal that when faced with inconceivable challenges our genuine identity is revealed These novels illustrate that identity comes from an amalgamation of factors namely being culture time and place When examined culture in its broadest sense is cultivated behaviour that is the totality of a persons learned accumulated experience Tamuedu in regards to religion language arts values and roles as well as the five basic psychological institutions family government partnership and education HubPages The time and place of the novels are much more tangible factors though they bear equal importance to the development of each characters identities as we will soon find out The following essay will evaluate first the role of these factors in establishing the abstained identity of Nomi Nickel the main character in the narrative A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews then the thriving identity of Matilda Laimo the antagonist in the novel Mister Pip written by Lloyd Jones In the novel A Complicated Kindness the main character Nomi establishes facets of her identity after picking up the pieces from her mother sisters sudden departure As the effects of this tragedy began to wear down life through Nomis eyes becomes barren and dull The reader is left with a skeleton of a character either coping through reminiscence aimless wandering or lying in the bed of a pick-up truck with her high school dropout boyfriend getting high On the contrary during the climax of Mister Pip Matilda is facing the ramifications of war with only her mother and a novel to aid in her coping When she loses both of those things Matilda is left with nothing to lose and no one to rely on but herself and as a result her identity is blossoming in the limelight Though each author expressed it from a different angle Lloyd Jones and Miriam
