Typically mid-life crisis has been attributed as a male ailment Over the last 25 years there has been an increase among women suffering from the disease There are a couple of major factors that play a role in the increase among women New studies have shown the increase of working women in the workforce Another factor that that would attribute to a womens mid-life crisis is the fact that in recent years women are obtaining higher educational degrees thus moving into higher positions of management in the workforce Women who achieve a position of authority in a company have the possibility to incur the same symptoms of their male counterparts might experience In the past when women traditionally stayed at home raised children and kept the house any symptoms of this ailment were attributed to what is called empty nest syndrome where although the children have grown up and moved away a woman will feel a sense of grief or loneliness While some might attribute a mid-life crisis to making impulse purchases or doing something extreme to stabilize their crisis symptoms this is only typical among males when a woman suffers from a mid- life crisis she will make changes in her life or lifestyle in more profound manner by making complete lifestyle changes in career or her family life altogether A mid-life crisis can be a time of drastic change in a womans life but this time also can be a time of growing and a transition into a more meaningful future Studies have shown an increase among women having mid-life crisis because women are in the workforce upholding careers and experiencing empty nest syndromeWomens role in the workforce has increased during the last two decades According to the US Labor Force the number of women in the workforce has increased in the last 50 years Toosi 2002 With more women holding careers and maintaining the traditional
