Indias approach to development post 1990 has included many different efforts and policies to try and alleviate the countrys growing problems poverty hunger illiteracy and gender inequality These problems have grown from the unequal distribution of assets in the country which was caused by globalization and the influence of western countries but are perpetuated by social institutions that are difficult to remove Policy ProblemsFor instance the problem of hunger is incredibly telling of the problems that Indias development has India grows more than enough food to feed its own population but because of unjust distribution and the urbanization movement that is pressured by a culture that is beginning to value technology and industry over agriculture and tradition The government is aware of these problems but has thus far been unsuccessful in finding a sustainable alternative to eradicate these problems Many times instead of addressing the root of the problem the government attempts to alleviate the side effects In the hunger crisis the government implemented the Public Distribution Scheme PDS of the 1960s to try and help This policy provides grains and sugar monthly to families in need at least ideally Families with ration cards receive certain amounts of grain based on their income they are categorized into Above Poverty Line APL and Below Poverty Line BPL families and given the correlated amount of food If this policy worked perfectly as it should families in rural areas would not go hungry because of their monthly ration provided by the state at PDS ration shops However there is an extensive amount of corruption and ineffectiveness within this scheme that makes it largely unsuccessful Only 40 of the grains harvested for this program are actually delivered to ration shops and because of poor storage the food that does make it to the PDS shop is inedible and spoiled Another problem with this program is that often times families who are desperately in need of food are so poor
