Pope Urban IIThe crusades involved many important people from the kings to the knights but there was only one that actually got it started and that was Pope Urban IIPope Urban II first called for the first crusade when the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos requested their assistance in defeating the Turks in March 1095 When he did this he pictured mercenaries paid professional soldiers whose skill and experience would rival that of the emperors armies Although thats the opposite of what Urban had in mind After hearing that help was needed they not only reacted but they saw it as an opportunity to take back Jerusalem the Holy Land that was taken from them by the Muslims some time ago With that in response to the request a speech was given at the Council of Clermont in November in which the Pope gave a highly effective sermon on the first crusade that no longer exists with the exact words the Pope said at the time In this speech he summoned the attending nobility and the people to wrest the Holy Land and the eastern churches generally from the control of the Seljuk Turks This was a speech that was known to have changed the world or course of history The words were geared for the French and anyone who wanted or had to participate In his speech he basically said that the Turks not only stole the Christians lands but they were very cruel and terrible to Christians based on their actions As seen in some readings out there this was seen to be a great exaggeration because this was only the beginning According to Robert the Monks account of Urbans speech here is a phrase that was saidYou should shudder brethren you should shudder at raising a violent hand against Christians it is less wicked to brandish your sword against Saracens When he said this he was basically aiming towards the Christian knights
