The ongoing issue of the gender gap in Japan has been examined by traditional values economic systems and inefficient government policies This essay argues that inefficient government policies are the main reasons for Japanese women to devote themselves as a stay home wife or mother On the other hand traditional values and economic systems gives an outlook on social norms and problems of pursuing career as a mother but both approaches fail to provide evidences that would fully explains the reasons of gender inequality when it comes to work placeIn her article Tiana Norgen The Society for Japanese Studies portrays the Japanese view on the causes of low fertility rates Norgen claims that Japanese people believed that abortion is safer than birth control pills however this seems strange given that Japan has second highest per capita consumption of pharmaceuticals Norgen 90 Even though the article fails to explain the gender gap at home and at work place the article portrays how Japan can disagree on subjects that most of the western countries claimed to be logical and reasonable Conservative views on abortion has been affected many individuals all around the world to look for other options than abortion many western countries are informing individuals on birth control tools to use in order to prevent the circumstances However Japan has been in this debate over the debates and no matter how scientifically safe the birth control rates are there are other factors that will keep Japanese culture to maintain their traditional ways The core values of Japanese society seem to mold young individuals attitude and their social vales Since Japanese main income was through agriculture over the decades heavy tools and animal based farming created less favorable work environment for women in Japan Instead they were assigned to take care of her parents or husbands aged parents as well as their children According to historical articles childcare options were not considered and seemed against cultural norms
