Through internal and external conflict in Act 1 Scene 2 of A Raisin in the Sun Lorraine Hansberry illustrates Beneathas pressure to blend in with other cultures and attitudes As Asagai is introduced into the play he brings her gifts of African clothes and teases her about her mutilated hair by stating that She wears it well very well mutilated hair and all 61 Beneatha then makes an excuse by stating it is not mutilation 62 However Hansberry implies that Beneathas internal conflict is actually about her assimilation and not accepting her culture by changing her hair Although she loves the African clothes she received from Asagai her mutilated hair adds irony to the situation Beneatha wants to express herself by becoming a doctor and do all these other things but she still tries to fit in with society by mutilating her hair rather than keeping it natural Beneatha uses the self-mechanism of denial to force the idea that she doesnt try to be same as society and other cultures Through the internal and external conflict here Hansberry illustrates Beneathas emotions in order to characterize her more fully With Beneathas use of assimilation Hansberry wants the readers to realize that sometimes change isnt so great For example Beneathas assimilation is described through the use of her hair which causes Asagai to see less interest in her As a result the audience is reminded that you shouldnt change for anyone but if you do change for someone dont forget who you are
