In order to hire a successful candidate for a job the interviewer must use the structured interview technique also known as a standardized interview A structured interview technique is a technique to help narrow the choice of the applicant down by asking the appropriate questions Structured interviews have been proven to be the most effective way to interview It will help the interviewer understand what the applicant is capable of in the specific workplace it will create a successful interview and it will help from creating snap judgments that usually get interviewers into troubleStructured interviewing according to Malcolm Gladwell is the only interviewing technique to have success in predicting performance in the workplace Gladwell 390 The technique includes treating every applicant the same and asking questions that would help the interviewer understand how that applicant would perform in a particular work environment The author of Techniques for interviewing and screening job applicants talks about the different questions that should be asked such as what prior employment situations does the applicant have that would help them in the new potential position The knowledge of the applicants prior employment is important for an interviewer because this will give an idea of what the applicant knows and has seen in the past It also gives the interviewer knowledge on how much training he or she may need Asking questions about how they handled past situations that could be similar to situations they may see in the future position is also another great question The question will help the interviewer know if he or she will be able to handle the problem or situation appropriately before they are even faced with it Many other questions should be asked to form the perfect idea of who the interviewer will be hiring According to Ronald Riggio hiring interviews are unsuccessful because often times they are unstructured rambling conversations when they should be serious attempts to gather information about the applicants
