Contradictory to the collective nature of Egyptian society many people are lately seen in public with ear buds Regardless of the color and size of such ear buds the carrier is always identified as one whos listening to a personal soundtrack and hence should not be disturbed Such scenes are witnessed in the streets public transport coffee shops beaches and recreational areas since IPods were first introduced in 2001 IPod users are mostly young adults or teenagers yet there are scores of middle-aged ladies and men who use such devices in public Apart from of the nature of personal soundtracks that are mostly music some users especially male adults have their IPods laden with the Holy Quran despite being requested by religious teachings to further fuse with the Umma society Nevertheless all such users convey the exclusive distinct message Do not disturb Indifferent to the deeply-rooted social norms of Egyptian society IPods allow total detachment from surroundings thus marking their users as anti-social a fact that raises uncommunicativeness among the once intimate society All the same such tendency is unfamiliar to Egyptian society where individuals are always eager to grant their undivided attention to their fellow citizens Disparate to the period between the 1960s and late 1980s where people were seen reading books in public and could always be interrupted either by someone asking direction or being inquisitive about something the case with IPods is different Book readers have always rendered attention to their surroundings and displayed a pro social trend All the same they always resumed reading after any kind of interruption without the least indication that they were upset On the other hand IPod users communicate a relatively aggressive message that they should not be disturbed for any reason I wouldnt stop someone wearing those white wires to ask for directions Its like theyre putting up a big closed sign Castella and asks an IPod user about something the latter
