In his chapter on literature and cultural studies in Literary Theory A Very Short Introduction Jonathan Culler writes that the value of studying Shakespeare rather than soap operas can no longer be taken for granted and needs to be argued 53 This radical question forces the idea that literary study of canon literary texts maybe in danger of being replaced with cultural studies of pop culture such as soap operas Culler is aware that there is a great debate on what the mass population has counted as literature worthy of study 50 This debate stems from the question whether cultural studies is destroying the value of traditional interpretation of literary works and making canon literature compete for the attention that a popular soap opera receives In this paper I argue that literary works do not compete for the attention of culturally studied television shows but actually enhances the level of literary and cultural analysis creating a hybrid study occurring when someone watches their favorite TV show In his chapter what is literature and does it matter Culler explains that what we define as literature is similar to what we define as weeds No longer can we simply look at literature as the set of texts that cultural arbiters recognize as belonging to literature 23 Our current society now has the choice to judge what they feel is worthy of being defined as literature just as one judges what plant can be called a weed in their garden No longer do we need to carry out a historical sociological perhaps psychological enquiry of what is worthy of study as literature 23 How we treat our definition of literature is what has evolved the modes of analysis and interpretation have grown to incorporate the basic reader analysis taught to us since middle school and also a fresh study of cultural placement in each piece of literature Before I continue to
