Over the past decade members over certain Native American tribes have come forward against the Washington Redskins name It has been suggested that the redskins name is a racial slur referring to the skin tone of Native Americans Washington Redskins executive claim that the name is not racist but points to the rich and proud heritage of the Native American people Other third parties claim that because most tribes indorse the name that it cant be racist But if one person is offended isnt that enough I will discuss in my paper the different arguments for and against the name including a supreme court ruling and the most recent letter from the executive owner of the redskins with his thoughts on the matter Before continuing on with facts and quotes I would like to state that while this decision has no real bearing on my life I do have a bias in the matter While growing up in the Washington DC area I have been a life long Dallas Cowboys fan and I love seeing controversy in their clubhouse because it distracts them on the football field The Washington Redskins and my favorite team the Dallas Cowboys are one of the biggest rivalries in sports going back to 1960First I would like to discuss the history of the Washington Redskins On July 9th 1932 a man by the name of George Preston Marshall buys a football franchise for Boston Massachusetts They placed the team at braves field and the team was named the Boston Braves Almost one year later to the day on July 8th 1933 the owners decide that Fenway field would be a better place for the team and change the name to the Boston Redskins and eventually moved to Washington DC in 1937 to become the Washington Redskins It is said that the owner found the name Redskins authentic and comical and hired a man that was assumed to be part Sioux
